A hit and run suspect has been arrested after a fatal accident in East Las Vegas claimed the life of a teenage boy.
On Monday night at about 8:30 pm, the police responded to the report of a hit and run. By the time the police arrived at the scene, the driver had sped off. In fact, witnesses stated that the car took off immediately after running over the victim and didn’t call 911. Thankfully, a witness did call the police who came to the scene within minutes.
A 15-year old boy was trying to cross East Tropicana Avenue near South Morris Street. The pedestrian was in a crosswalk when he was mowed down by a woman driving a red sportscar. The accident happened due East of Nellis Boulevard.
Apparently, someone driving a 2002 Acura MDX hit the boy when he was trying to cross the street. Several hours after the accident, the police tracked down a car they believed was involved in the accident. Shortly thereafter, 34-year old Crystal N. Helm, of Las Vegas, turned herself in and admitted her involvement in the crash.
The teen was rushed to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital.
The investigation is still being completed. The police have not indicated if alcohol or drugs were involved in the accident. They have also not confirmed what charges will be filed against the woman who hit the young man.
The cops did confirm that, so far, she has been charged with failure to stop at the scene of an accident and failure to yield to a pedestrian. However, now that the victim has died, she may face additional charges.
