CALIENTE, NV – The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed that the pilots of two single-engine planes died Thursday when they collided while battling a wildfire near Caliente.
According to KTNV, the pilots were fighting the Bishop Fire in Rainbow Canyon, about 17 miles from Caliente. Each pilot was the only occupant of their respective planes, which were both Air Tractor AT8Ts.
The pilots were assisting firefighters on the ground by dropping flame retardant on the now-500-acre fire.
The cause of the collision is under investigation by the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board. The identities of the pilots have not been released yet.
