Las Vegas

Las Vegas is a city located in Southeastern Nevada. It’s the only major city in the American West that was founded in the 20th century, and it grew from a desert-bound, tiny railroad service center around the outset of the 20th century to the fastest growing metropolis in the country at the end of the century. This transformation was enabled by a combination of access to water, shrewd entrepreneurship, permissive state laws, and an extensive transport network, which created the city we now know as Las Vegas – a place of vast casinos, spectacular entertainment venues, and elaborate hotels, all of which attract masses of visitors from all over the world.

Las Vegas is not only the largest city in Nevada, but also it’s the main economic center. Its metropolitan area, which has more than twice the number of people outside the city limits as within them, hosts roughly 75% of the total state population.

In the late 1980s, Las Vegas’ overall grow was accelerating to match the thriving tourist and gaming economy. Between 1980 and 1990, its population rose by almost 100,000 to surpass the 250,000 mark, and went on to exceed the 500,000 mark early in the 21st century. The metropolitan area reached the 1 million mark in the mid-1990s and was on its way to double that number a decade later. The city has long been characterized by periods of sweeping change and growth, tourism and the vast array of ancillary services have provided the city a constant measure of continuity over the years.
