When magnesium production started declining, the state legislature passed a bill granting the state’s Colorado River Commission to buy the related industrial plants. This lead to Henderson being incorporated by 1953. Lake Las Vegas is located in Henderson. CNN Money ranked this as the No. 66 destination in their “Best Places to Live”. When Forbes listed “America’s Safest Cities”, it ranked second. Henderson started off as a town during World War II when the Basic Magnesium Plant was constructed. The town swiftly turned into the primary magnesium supplier in the domestic United States, and many involved in the war effort called magnesium the “miracle metal”. Henderson’s total land area is approximately 108 square miles.

The city is home to the Multigenerational Facility at Liberty Pointe, which is the biggest recreational facility in the state. It’s also home to the one scenic Bird Preserve in Nevada. Henderson Libraries

Henderson Libraries trace their history back to 1944 in the downtown area when a petition drive sought to come up with a Henderson School Public Library. By 1951, the library featured its initial Children’s Summer Reading Program. Since then, Henderson Libraries continues to provide creative kid’s content and events, helping area children take an interest in the library. Compassionate care is central to the guiding beliefs of the Adrian Dominican Sisters, and it’s been that way for them for more than seven decades. The only faith-based and not-for-profit healthcare system in the community is Dignity Health.

The St. Rose Dominican Hospitals reflect the vision and values of the Adrain Dominican Sisters. They rely on their God and history for their will and meaning. Originally, a group of Adrian Dominican Sisters left Germany in the latter half of the 1800s for the city of Adrian in Michigan. In 1947, seven of them decided to make their way to southern Nevada so they could serve the local community now known as Henderson. The current Sisters follow in their footsteps, operating a trio of St. Rose Dominican hospitals across the southern end of the state.
